0330L-MONDAY OUTLOOK FROM GARFIELD COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT- 5/19/25

“MODERATE RISK” FOR SEVERE WEATHER TODAY INTO TONIGHT. ALL HAZARDS ARE POSSIBLE. Below is a great analogy of the days events by an NWS forecaster. Numbers 2 and 3 will be of concern for us.

*Three different “regimes”/development mechanisms are expected to offer concern for severe weather by early this afternoon through evening:

#1: 2 PM – 5 PM –> east-central into southeast Oklahoma –> scattered thunderstorms along a surface convergence boundary –> very large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.

#2: 4 PM – 10 PM –> US Highway 81 corridor and east –> scattered to numerous thunderstorms off of a dryline –> very large hail, significant damaging winds and tornadoes.

#3: 7 PM – 1 AM Tuesday –> northern Oklahoma –> a few thunderstorms behind a cold front –> damaging wind gusts and potential for hail.

*While today may feature the highest coverage of severe thunderstorms across the area, not every location will see severe weather. However, given the potential severity of outcomes (Baseball-softball size hail, 80+ mph wind gusts, and strong-EF2+ tornadoes) everyone should plan for that reality.

Overall, we’ll should be ok so here is your forecast from the NWS/NORMAN;

Today- Mostly sunny. A chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Some thunderstorms may be severe. Highs in the mid-80s. South winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.

Tonight- Partly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening, then mostly clear after midnight. Some thunderstorms may be severe. Less humid with lows in the mid-50s. Southwest winds 15 to 20 mph, becoming northwest 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Chance of rain 50 percent.
