Tuesday Weather Outlook From Garfield County Emergency Management – 9/8/2026

Another very hot day is ahead across the area today. We will also be watching for a change in the weather pattern beginning Wednesday.

Today

Sunny and hot, with a high near 103°. Heat index values could reach 106°. South winds will be around 13–15 mph, with gusts up to 23 mph.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect through 7 PM this evening. Make sure you are staying hydrated, taking frequent breaks if working outside, and limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

Tonight

Clear and warm, with a low around 76°. South winds will remain at 9–13 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph.

⛈️ Looking Ahead to Wednesday

Wednesday will start out hot and sunny, with temperatures again reaching around 103° and heat index values potentially reaching 107°.

By Wednesday afternoon and evening, we will have a chance for showers and thunderstorms as a front moves into the area. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the Garfield County area in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms. This means isolated severe storms are possible, but widespread severe weather is not expected.

The primary time frame to watch will be roughly 3 PM through 11 PM Wednesday.

For our area, the main concerns with any stronger storms would be:

  • 💨 Strong to potentially damaging wind gusts
  • 🧊 Small hail
  • ⚡ Frequent lightning
  • 🌧️ Heavy rainfall

The good news is that Wednesday into Thursday brings our best chance for meaningful rainfall in several weeks. Garfield County currently has a 30–40% chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon, increasing substantially Wednesday night, with additional showers and storms possible Thursday.

Thursday will also bring a significant cooldown, with highs around 89–91° and a good chance for additional rain and thunderstorms.

For now, today’s heat remains the biggest concern. We’ll keep a close eye on Wednesday’s storms as we get closer, but at this time the severe weather threat is Marginal — not a major severe weather setup.
