0315L-FRIDAY OUTLOOK FROM GARFIELD COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT-6/11/21

1- HEAT ADVISORY CONTINUES UNTIL THIS EVENING AT 7PM. There is a “cold” front moving our way that won’t give us much relief. It may give us some thunderstorm activity but that actually may be unlikely due to a very strong inversion, “the cap” in the lower atmosphere. If you plan to travel north or east today and especially this evening, stay weather aware and pay attention to advisories and warnings from the NWS/NORMAN or NWS/TULSA. If you are going north NWS/Wichita. All the NWS websites can be found here- https://gcem.org/links/

2- IF STORMS DO OCCUR, we would most likely see a viable hail and mostly WIND event. We’ll have to wait and see how timing of the front comes into play with evening cooling aloft. This does put us in a MARGINAL risk for severe weather tonight but again, we’ll see what subsequent forecast updates say.

3- The HEAT is the main issue so continue to use EXTREME CAUTION while working outside. Take a few more breaks and stay hydrated. Don’t drink pop, caffeine products, or alcohol. Drink water and take supplements that replace electrolytes back into your system. There are many products that are available for this. If you notice that you have quit sweating, STOP and get to a cool place and re-hydrate. You could be in dangerous territory. If you feel weak and dizzy, get MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY-CALL 911.

4- Overall, we’ll be ok so pay close attention to yourself, your kids, and your pets. I can’t believe I even have to say this one but DON’T LEAVE YOUR KIDS OR PETS IN THE CAR WHILE RUNNING ERRANDS.

5- Here is your forecast from the NWS/NORMAN;

Friday-Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Heat index values as high as 107. South southeast wind 10 to 15 mph becoming north northeast in the afternoon.

Friday Night-40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1am. Some of the storms could be severe. Partly cloudy, with a low around 69. East wind 6 to 10 mph becoming northwest after midnight.

WE’LL ADVISE AS NEEDED
